about EFT
What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a structured approach to couples therapy formulated in the 1980’s. It has its foundation in attachment theory which emphasizes the human need to be seen, understood and celebrated by those special people in our lives.
In the last fifteen years, Dr. Sue Johnson and her colleagues have further developed and refined the model and completed numerous studies. EFT is also used with families and individuals. A substantial body of research outlining the effectiveness of EFT now exists.
Why I practice EFT
EFT is my foundational therapy model with individuals and couples. EFT provides a framework to understand how humans are hardwired for connection to those special people in our lives from birth to the end of life. It makes sense that when we are feeling rejected or disconnected from those precious people that it is painful and scary. From the early days of my therapy work, I learned how moving it can be to facilitate conversations about attachment. It is beautiful and very rewarding work!
